It seems oh so very long ago that I was heading to the Norfolk countryside for my first UK getaway of 2020. Little did I know then that it may well be the ONLY break I take this year. The situation with Covid-19 and all hospitality and leisure facilities closing down means that this write up is coming to you a little later than I anticipated. But, if you’re feeling ready to dip your toe back in to those travel waters when restrictions ease on the 4th July, I’ve got the perfect place for you to escape to.
Woodlakes Park has a collection of traditionally built timber cabins set in 66 acres of beautiful woodland, overlooking two fishing lakes. The cabins can sleep between 2 and 6 people and a handful of them are also pet friendly. We actually got to experience two cabins during our stay and both were incredibly cosy and had a real “home from home” feel about them. All cabins feature open plan living areas and fully fitted kitchens so if you don’t fancy dining out at the new on site restaurant Jack’s, you can absolutely cook yourself up a storm.
Despite it being March when we visited, we were very fortunate to have beautiful spring weather. There’s nothing quite like waking up in the morning, stepping out on to your own private veranda and sipping hot coffee whilst looking out over a clear lake. And whilst the enticing scent of the timber and a good book could’ve easily kept me indoors for hours, it seemed criminal not to go out and explore the beautiful surroundings. Walking around the lake and breathing in the fresh air, oh and the lack of wifi….. what a perfect way to unwind.
The staff at Woodlakes Park really couldn’t do enough for us during our stay. I had contacted them prior to our visit to explain that Charlie is autistic and therefore has certain needs and they really went above and beyond to accommodate him. Like you know when I said we stayed in two cabins? It was actually due to the fact that the we couldn’t fit Charlie’s USB stick in to the back of the TV. Maybe that doesn’t seem like that much of a staycation necessity but for Charlie, it’s everything. Woodlakes Park were able to find us another available cabin and very quickly too. I’m sure any parents out there will appreciate this level of customer service, regardless of whether their child has special needs or not. Also…. Charlie may have managed to throw his shoe in the lake (stop laughing) and two of the staff on site rushed to get a canoe and paddled out to rescue it. It was actually pretty exciting but I really appreciated it more than I’m sure they realise.
On the second day of our stay we ventured in to the nearby market town of Kings Lynn. It’s a beautiful little place, jam packed with history and colour. Also we stopped off for fish and chips because how can you possibly visit a seaport town without sampling a chippy? It DID NOT disappoint. Charlie even managed to find the local Costa Coffee which naturally made him one very happy little explorer. With Kings Lynn only being around a twenty minute drive from Woodlakes Park, I would definitely recommend that you check it out and wander through it’s mostly pedestrianised, very cute streets.
The evenings were so cosy in the cabins. So much so that I pretty much just didn’t want to leave. There’s something so incredibly enchanting about this “simpler” way of live. The peace, the quiet, the nature. Being at Woodlakes Park really was exactly the reset I needed. After Europe and the van, moving house, settling back in to every day life. It was just the most perfect little staycation, and it really only reenforced the idea that we actually need very little in our lives to be happy.
