If you’ve been following my Green is the New Black series, you’ll know that I am always on the look out for the most unique and interesting sustainable swaps out there. When we think about switching to zero waste products, we perhaps don’t even consider the luxury items in our lives. Yet being on lockdown, I’ve certainly realised that having those little luxuries and rituals that make us feel better, it’s so important. That’s why I was beyond thrilled to hear from Phena London’s founder, Patricia Romero. Patricia, who has a keen interest in sustainability, wellness and the restaurant industry, turns waste cooking oil into the most beautiful aromatherapy candles, that look and smell incredible. I needed to find out more about the UK’s first circular aromatherapy candle.
Firstly, What Is Circularity?
Circularity is an economic system that aims to eliminate waste and maximise the reuse of resources. Circular systems make use of design, recycling, reuse, remanufacturing and refurbishment to create a closed loop system, minimising the use of natural resources and limiting the creation of waste, pollution and carbon emissions. Because Phena are using waste cooking oil, they’re utilising something that is already in circulation in the economy and therefore avoiding resources that could then be used for something else entirely.
Where Did The Idea For A Circular Aromatherapy Candle Come From?
Patricia explains that the idea for Phena was actually a bit of a lightbulb moment for her. Having always been interested in sustainability along with completing a Chef’s diploma, the amount of food waste and how we tackle it (or not) became ever more apparent to her. When researching the world of candles, Patricia found that many brands are using either paraffin or natural waxes for their products. Whilst natural waxes are better for our health, they may not always be beneficial to the environment. Some natural waxes are also produced through industrial farming which in many circumstances, may contribute to deforestation. Did you also know that the majority of candle wicks are cotton, although they most likely also contain other components to assist with burning. The cotton can also be treated with chemicals which in turn, release toxins in to the air. Phena, however, use an all natural alternative in FSC certified wooden wicks for all of their candles.
Why Waste Oil From Restaurants? And Which Ones?
All restaurants will have a significant amount of waste cooking oils. Many choose to work with biofuel companies who pick up the oil for a fee. Others, however, may be disposing of oil improperly which contributes to the broader waste problem. Phena work with solely plant based restaurants across London for several reasons. The first being that vegetable oils are far less taxing on the environment than animal fats. Secondly, plant based restaurants seem to have a similar ethos to Phena when it comes to sustainability and environmental views. It would seem it’s a fairly natural partnership that benefits both businesses. Cafe Van Gogh in Oval is just one of the independent restaurants that Phena have worked with so far. Oh and lastly, did you know that all oils have different burn characteristics? Phena found that working with certain vegetable oils meant they were able to maintain a quality standard across all of their products.
Are Circular and Sustainable Products More Expensive to Create?
I regularly hear people say that switching to more sustainable alternatives is more expensive. Sadly, it does seem to be the reality of the situation. So why exactly is this? Patricia explained that sustainable and natural materials have increased costs due to availability and smaller production scales. Speaking about Phena candles specifically, the aromatherapy candles’ scent comes from natural essential oils which cost much more than synthetic ones. All of the candles are hand poured locally in small batches which takes more time than if they were being produced on an industrial scale. So whilst the more natural, zero waste option may indeed be more expensive, the quality is undeniable. Not to mention the fact that circular aromatherapy candles such as these, are paving the way for a more conscious and sustainable way to shop.
So what did I think…..? Well, not only is this candle beautifully packaged, it smells absolutely amazing. When I close my eyes I’m totally transported by the scent of lavender, clary sage, chamomile, geranium and bergamot. And then there’s the crackling of the wooden wick. So intoxicating. It’s like a spa day moment but from the comfort of my own bed. And to be quite honest, who doesn’t need a little bit of escapism in our current situation? I am all for sustainable and ethical swaps that allow me to relax and that let my mind wander to better places.
Be sure to check out Phena’s Instagram page and website and show some support to an independent small business who are putting our planet first during these unprecedented times.
